What is a TV assistive device?

In its simplest form, a TV assistive device is a piece of equipment that can connect to your TV. It can produce an unrivalled quality of sound for your viewing pleasure. The device usually consists of 2 parts:

The Transmitter: This connects directly into your TV and sends the sound to the receiver wirelessly, meaning once you set it up you don’t have to remove it from your TV.

The Receiver: This device catches the signal sent by the transmitter and converts it into sound, which is picked up by your hearing aids via an induction hearing loop, producing a higher quality experience.

Why would I need a TV assistive product?

The whole point of having a TV assistive device is to make your TV viewing experience as enjoyable as possible. This is not just for yourself, but for anyone else viewing it. If you watch TV regularly and suffer from hearing loss this is a must-have device.

What level of hearing loss is a TV listening device useful for?

This device catches the signal sent by the transmitter and converts it into sound, which is picked up by your hearing aids via an induction loop. The induction loop’s purpose is to connect the users’ hearing aids and the TV device, resulting in a higher quality experience.

How will a TV assistive device improve my experience?

These devices help to eliminate the interference of the background noise whilst also allowing the wearer to adjust the volume independently. Some are used in conjunction with hearing aids and others can be used without the need for hearing aids, it all depends on the model you choose.

What are the advantages of wireless TV headphones?

Improved mobility – Thanks to the wireless feature, you get the freedom of listening to your device throughout your house, meaning you can continue enjoying it wherever your wifi reaches.

Great sound quality – Wireless TV Headphones allow for an unmatched level of sound quality and immersion.

What are the advantages of TV ears?

Reduced interference – Zero interference from outside sources making sure you get the best sound unbroken.

Increased privacy – You no longer have to worry about people connecting to your devices, since infrared is a single connection.

Good sound quality – You can always be assured of a good sound, especially if you have one of the upper band pairs.

What is the advantage of a neck loop system over traditional designs?

Only requires telecoil compatibility – This is helpful for people with older models of hearing aids who watch TV. You can turn your hearing aids to the telecoil program in order to listen to the TV through the loop system.

It can connect to the audio output of the television set, or pick up the sound coming directly from the television’s speakers. The neck loop system works through the listener’s telecoil setting on the hearing aids to transmit the TV audio wirelessly to the hearing aids.

Why shouldn’t I just turn up the TV instead of getting an assistive TV device?

Turning the volume up on the TV is definitely not the best solution for many reasons.

It can deteriorate speech clarity if the volume is raised, depending on the quality of the tv speakers. The level of the sound may become uncomfortably loud, especially for those who wish to watch the television with you. Louder sounds can cause further damage your ears and those of other people around you.

The evolution of the TV assistive device

Original Creation

The original concept for hearing assistive devices came in the form of TV Ears, which were conceived in 1998 by George Dennis, Vince Primerano and Grant Gaynor in the United States.

This was due to the problem Dennis faced with his father. The original issue was when his father began to lose his hearing, there was no present solution for him to watch TV.

As such Dennis went on a quest to create his solution, it would take many different designs but the TV Ears 5.0 was created and released onto the market.

Modern Day

Today there are multiple different types of TV Assistive Devices on the market, however, Dennis’ original type TV Ears remains the most popular and widely used.

As time goes on, advanced technology has started to replace the original design with a more sophisticated version, such as the neck loop.
